The difference between working, test and burst pressure

Short answer

Working pressure refers to the service limit, test pressure to a defined test condition, and burst pressure to a separate strength test. The burst value is not a usable working pressure; no single universal ratio is assumed for every hose.

TermHow is it interpreted?
Working pressureService limit depending on the product and service condition
Test pressurePressure value of a specific test; not a permission for use
Burst pressureValue from a strength test; not an operating setting

Assembly pressure and system approval

The hose label alone does not determine the pressure limit of the whole assembly. The end connections are also assessed. Finding the lowest value among the components does not automatically turn incompatible components into an approved system. For this reason, assembly approval and component pressure must be assessed separately.

When passing on a pressure value

  • For which product code and size was the value given?
  • Under which temperature and fluid condition is it valid?
  • Is it gauge or absolute; if unknown, is that stated explicitly?
  • Is it a test value or a service limit?
  • Can the current document and table row be shown?

Frequently asked questions

Can I find the working pressure by dividing the burst pressure by four?

This is not a universal selection method. The working value in the product documentation and the relevant service standard are the basis.

Can a hose that passed a test be used in every application?

No. Test scope and suitability for the application are separate assessments.
