Separating ATEX claims from the electrical properties of hoses

Short answer

Electrical conductivity and ATEX conformity are not the same concept. A hose being described as antistatic does not automatically show that the entire assembly is suitable for every use in an explosive atmosphere or that it holds a particular certificate.

Technical explanation

The European Commission explains that the ATEX product directive 2014/34/EU and the workplace directive 1999/92/EC address different responsibilities. ISO 8031, on the other hand, concerns methods for determining electrical resistance and conductivity in hoses and hose assemblies. A measurement result is not an assessment covering all ignition risks. The nature of the product and the context of use must be examined separately; the same certification route is not assumed for every hose.

How to evaluate it in practice

Bring the fluid, area classification, temperatures, materials and the electrical connection arrangement of the assembly into the technical assessment. Ask the manufacturer by which method and for which assembly scope the electrical properties are declared. Do not accept the mere presence of wire as proof of continuity. The ATEX scope, the required conformity route and the facility's protective measures must be evaluated by a competent expert. A zone classification or safe resistance threshold must not be derived from a general hose guide.

Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.

Before a scope decision is made

  • Have the gas, vapor, mist or dust forming the explosive atmosphere and the zone classification been taken from the facility record?
  • Has an expert determined whether the hose assembly is equipment, a component or an in-plant connection?
  • Have the 2014/34/EU product responsibility and the 1999/92/EC workplace responsibility been separated?
  • Has the required electrical behavior been defined separately for the product, the fitting and the end-to-end assembly?
  • Have the resistance/conductivity measurement method and acceptance threshold been verified with an applicable source?
  • Are hot surfaces, impact, leaks and other ignition sources besides static electricity included in the risk assessment?

Frequently asked questions

Is a hose labeled antistatic ATEX certified?

These terms are not the same. The existence and scope of a certificate and the suitability of the actual assembly are verified separately.
