Conductive, antistatic and insulating hoses: the differences

Short answer

The terms conductive, antistatic and insulating do not mean the same thing. It should be stated which electrical property is defined by which test method and product standard; a single resistance range should not be assumed for all hose families.

Technical explanation

ISO 8031 covers test methods for evaluating the electrical resistance and conductivity of hoses and hose assemblies. Whether the measurement is made end to end, on the surface or along another defined path affects the result and its interpretation. The electrical characteristic of a hose cannot be reliably inferred from its color or wire reinforcement. Electrical suitability and pressure resistance are separate properties. An application-specific assessment is required for explosive atmospheres or for an electrical insulation function.

How to evaluate it in practice

In the product database, use fields for the manufacturer's definition, test standard, measurement path and conditions instead of a single field such as 'antistatic: yes'. If a numerical limit is to be published, link it to the actual product and the applicable standard. If the record is incomplete, do not suggest automatic suitability. If the supplier document gives conductivity only for the inner tube, do not present it as the end-to-end result for the whole assembly. When there is a physical product change, check again whether the previous measurement is still valid.

Frequently asked questions

Are antistatic and electrically insulating the same thing?

No. These are different objectives; accepting a product as suitable for the other function can be dangerous.
