Short answer
When an outdated standard reference is found, the status of the document and any superseding edition are investigated first. Publication of a new edition does not automatically make an older product unsafe or compliant with the new edition; contractual and technical impacts are evaluated separately.
Technical explanation
Public standards records can show withdrawal and replacement information. For example, there is a 2026 edition for ISO 1436, and there are 2026 records for EN 853/856/857. This change information does not mean that all normative differences have been reviewed. Confirmation of a standard and publication of a new edition are also different processes; the confirmation year must not be written as the edition year.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Old reference | Exact wording used in the catalog |
| Current status | Published, confirmed or withdrawn |
| Impact | Product, test, contract and marking |
| Action | Manufacturer clarification and documented revision |
How to evaluate it in practice
Keep the wording in the catalog in its original form and maintain the current bibliographic field separately. Check which edition the purchase specification requires. If the edition change affects the product, test method or marking, ask the manufacturer for clarification. Instead of deleting old documents, mark their validity and context of use. A product claim against the new edition should be updated only on a suitable basis; bulk-changing the year in the database is not technical verification.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Is the year of a confirmed standard changed?
No. The edition year and the periodic confirmation date must be kept as separate pieces of information.
