The difference between a serial number and a batch number

Short answer

Batch traceability follows a common production group, while individual serial traceability follows each physical hose. If maintenance, test and service history is specific to one hose, an individual identification is required; batch information is kept alongside it.

Technical explanation

Hoses produced in a batch to the same technical definition can go to different sites and build up different service histories. For this reason, a batch and an individual unit must not be treated as the same record. In the proposed data approach, the production batch holds the common components and revision, while the individual unit holds delivery, test and service events. This in-house architecture proposal is not a claim that the same serial format is mandatory in every industry.

How to evaluate it in practice

Design the individual identification as a key that does not change; the customer name or a changeable location of use should not be the identification itself. When the same hose is retested, add it to the event history instead of creating a new physical product record. When a product is canceled, do not assign its number to another hose. For a batch-related nonconformance it should be possible to find all related units, and for an individual failure only the hose concerned. The history of records removed from service and relabeled must be preserved; empty or duplicate identifications must be rejected during record entry. Do not use the two fields interchangeably until the events tracked by the batch and the individual serial number have been defined.

Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.

Frequently asked questions

Can two hoses from the same batch share a maintenance record?

They can share a plan; however, the actual service and the inspection results obtained must be linked to the physical units.
