The difference between a product standard and a test standard

Short answer

A product standard addresses which product and performance framework is being discussed; a test standard addresses how a specific property is to be measured. The presence of a test method number in a report does not, on its own, prove that the product conforms to all requirements.

Technical explanation

For example, ISO 18752:2025 defines the product scope for single-pressure-class wire- or textile-reinforced hoses and hose assemblies for hydraulic applications. ISO 6803, on the other hand, covers the hydraulic pressure impulse test without flexing. ISO 1402 addresses hydrostatic test methods. The roles of these documents differ; other evaluations required in the product standard are not considered complete with a single test report.

How to evaluate it in practice

In the technical file, keep requirements and evidence in separate columns. Link the source of the requirement to the product standard, the method to the test document and the result to the specific report. Record which sample, size and revision the test was applied to. If the full text of the standard is not available, do not guess the list of missing tests. If the order contains a special requirement, mark separately whether it is a requirement of the standard or a customer requirement. Do not draw a conclusion about full product conformity from a test report until it has been determined whether the document is a product requirement or a test method.

Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ISO 1402 test alone show that the product conforms to ISO 18752?

No. A result obtained with a single method does not show that all requirements of the product standard have been met.
