Temperature and vacuum in ventilation hoses

Short answer

In ventilation hose selection, the suction or discharge condition, diameter, length, bends and any conveyed vapors or particles are as important as the air temperature. A lightweight duct hose is not by itself a compressed air hose.

Technical explanation

A flexible ventilation duct and a compressed air hose that carries energy may be designed for different tasks. Narrowing of the cross-section and a long route affect flow losses; the temperature and vacuum limits of the product are checked separately. The chemical effect of a gas or vapor cannot be ruled out merely by the word 'air'. Exposure to the external environment, flame and hot surfaces is also independent of the product's ability to carry hot air internally.

How is it assessed in practice?

For a hood or machine extraction, show the inlet and outlet points, the total route and tight bends on the drawing. Write oil mist, solvent vapor or hot particles in the contaminated air on separate lines. Do not guarantee fan performance merely by enlarging the hose diameter; the duct system must be evaluated as a whole. Plan for the hanger points not to constrict the hose and to distribute the weight appropriately. If the product's catalog limits are unknown, ask for manufacturer verification instead of searching for the limit through operational trials.

Frequently asked questions

Can a ventilation hose be used at a compressor outlet?

It cannot be used on the basis of similar appearance or diameter alone. The product concerned must be explicitly suitable for compressed air service.
