Evaluating the effect of temperature on PVC hose

Short answer

The catalog pressure of a PVC hose is meaningful together with the temperature condition stated in the catalog. For hotter operation, the permissible pressure or vacuum must be taken from the derating table of the product concerned or from the manufacturer's written assessment.

Technical explanation

Temperature affects the mechanical behavior of the hose material and the performance of the assembly. Ambient temperature and fluid temperature may not be the same; contact with a hot surface can create a local load. Flexibility in cold conditions is also evaluated separately. It is not correct to apply a single PVC derating factor to all formulations, wall constructions and diameters. If the manufacturer defines fluid and temperature limits together, they must not be exceeded individually.

How is it assessed in practice?

Add 'normal', 'maximum', 'start-up' and 'cleaning' temperatures to the quotation comparison. For example, if a line that normally carries water at ambient temperature is cleaned with hot water, cleaning is also a design input. If the source has no temperature curve, do not take another brand's curve from the internet and scale it. Mark the request as missing data and get a response from the manufacturer for the same product code. Check the limits of the fitting and seal independently of the hose curve.

Frequently asked questions

Is the same temperature factor applied to all PVC hoses?

No. The factor or curve must be verified for the product, construction and conditions of use concerned.
