Short answer
A dry disconnect coupling is a design that manages the connection and valve movement together in order to limit fluid release during disconnection. Dry disconnection is not the same function as a safety breakaway coupling that separates by breaking under tensile force; the process requirement must be clearly defined.

Technical explanation
The MannTek operating guide explains that, in the DDC product examined, the opening of the valve is linked to the locking of the two halves, and that the valve closes before disconnection. This operating principle does not mean the same mechanical details or permissible pressure for all manufacturers. The fluid, seal, coupling halves, maintenance and operating limits are taken from the product instructions. The term 'dry' does not make all exposure precautions relating to hazardous fluids unnecessary.

How is it assessed in practice?
For a loading line, write the routine connect-disconnect requirement and the safety requirement against unintended vehicle movement separately. Do not combine the two functions under a single coupling name. Operator training should include correct locking, face inspection and the isolation method to be applied in the event of a fault. Check compatibility again when the seal or mating half is changed. Determine the maintenance interval from the actual product instructions and intensity of use, not from a fixed period derived from this guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does a dry disconnect coupling automatically break away when the vehicle pulls it?
This may be a separate safety function; it should not be assumed to be present in every dry disconnect coupling.
