Short answer
A flat-face hydraulic quick coupling uses an interface that makes the connection face easier to clean. A low-spillage objective or a flat face does not mean that every model can be connected and disconnected under pressure; this feature is verified separately.
Technical explanation
ISO 16028:2023 is the relevant standard for flat-face quick couplings. The publicly available scope of the standard states that they are not designed for connection and disconnection under pressure. If a manufacturer has a special connect-under-pressure product, this is a separate product feature. The coupling's port thread, nominal bore, flow performance, seal and mating half are evaluated together. The same flat-face appearance is not proof of mutual compatibility across all series and brands.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Interface | Flat face and correct series |
| Residual pressure | No automatic permission to connect with a standard product |
| Flow | Actual coupling performance |
| Cleanliness | Management of face and caps |
How is it assessed in practice?
When changing mobile equipment, record the hose half and the machine half under separate codes. Protect the connection faces according to the relevant cleaning instructions; include the use of dust caps in the workflow. In the operation plan, evaluate pressure trapped in a closed line due to temperature changes. Do not try to operate a coupling that is hard to connect by striking it or by loosening a connection and draining fluid. Address the problem with the manufacturer's appropriate pressure relief or special connection solution.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Can an ISO 16028 coupling be connected under pressure?
The scope of the standard does not define this as a general feature. A special product and manufacturer instructions are required for such a need.
