Short answer
When selecting a steam hose, it must be determined whether the steam is saturated or superheated. Do not automatically carry the values a product gives for saturated steam over to another steam condition; the hose assembly and the service condition must be verified together.
The standard's title describes the application limit
The term saturated steam in the title of ISO 6134 should not be overlooked in the application definition. The Continental product page also contains a separate warning for superheated steam. For this reason, we do not use a selection rule that treats any hose rated for high temperature as a steam hose.
Read the pressure-temperature pair together with the regime
In saturated steam, pressure and saturation temperature are linked. If the actual temperature measured at the same pressure is above the saturation temperature, the fluid is in the superheated steam region; a value close to the saturated condition does not on its own indicate the dryness fraction. If a steam table is to be used, whether the table gives pressure as absolute or gauge must be matched with the reference of the gauge in the field. This conceptual check is not product selection; the steam type, pressure, temperature and cycling condition for the selected hose are sought separately in the manufacturer's documentation.

Application questions to send to the manufacturer
- What is the process definition of the steam and its normal/peak pressure-temperature pairs?
- Is the pressure gauge or absolute; what is its source?
- What are the continuous use, intermittent use and start-up conditions?
- Have condensate and cleaning conditions been defined separately?
- According to which document are the hose, fitting and clamping system selected together?
- How will the layout, turns and hot-surface contact be shown?

Why is there no general test value on this page?
The test or service limit of a steam hose should not be generalized to different models and sizes. Application approval is completed per product code and size with the manufacturer's current catalog, assembly and service information.

Frequently asked questions
Is a hose suitable for hot water also suitable for steam?
No. Hot water and steam services are not automatically equivalent; for steam service, an explicit manufacturer scope for the product is required.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Can saturated steam information be carried over to superheated steam?
It should not be carried over automatically; the scope of the standard and the manufacturer's relevant warnings are checked.
