Short answer
For a garden watering hose, first choose the inside diameter and length according to the distance the water has to travel; then look for a braid-reinforced construction with a UV-resistant outer layer and an opaque intermediate layer. Burst pressure and operating temperature vary by product; read the product's own value. A garden hose is not a drinking water hose.
Size: inside diameter and length
Garden hoses are referred to by their inside diameter in inches (such as 1/2", 5/8", 3/4"). For short distances and a hand spray gun, 1/2" is often sufficient; on a long line, with a sprinkler or several watering outlets, a larger diameter carries the water with less loss. Pressure loss also increases as the hose gets longer, so choose a length that reaches the farthest watering point and do not buy it unnecessarily long. Check that couplings and quick connectors are the same size as the hose diameter.

Construction: layers, braid, UV
In a durable garden hose the outer layer is UV-resistant against sunlight, the intermediate layer is opaque and prevents algae from forming inside, and the braid reinforcement in between provides pressure resistance. A single-layer hose without braid kinks and folds more easily and may swell under pressure. Burst pressure and operating temperature vary by product: two hoses from the same manufacturer can show different values such as 24 bar and 45 bar, or 0…+40 °C and -20…+65 °C. When comparing, read the product's own technical value.
Choosing by use
| Use | What to look at |
|---|---|
| Balcony, small garden | Short, lightweight hose; storage on a reel or hanger |
| Large garden, sprinkler | Larger inside diameter, braid-reinforced construction, pressure according to length |
| Line left in the sun | UV-resistant outer layer, opaque intermediate layer |
| Line left outdoors in winter | The product's lower temperature limit; draining the water inside |
| Drinking water | A hose certified for drinking water instead of a garden hose |
Use and storage
- After use, turn off the tap and release the pressure in the hose.
- Do not leave the hose in the sun or full of water; store it on a reel or hanger.
- Drain the water inside before winter; check the product's lower temperature limit.
- Check coupling seals and clamps at the start of the season.
Frequently asked questions
Can drinking water be taken from a garden hose?
A description given for garden watering does not mean suitability for drinking water. For drinking water, the product must have a certificate for contact with drinking water; do not use a garden hose for this purpose.
Why do algae form inside the hose?
In a hose that lets light through, algae can form as the water left inside is exposed to sunlight. Hoses with an opaque intermediate layer are made to prevent this.
Is a hose with a higher burst pressure always better?
Burst pressure is an indicator of durability but not the only criterion; diameter, length, flexibility, UV resistance and temperature range must also suit the use. Values vary by product; read the product's own technical data.
