How to assess blistering on steam hose

Short answer

A blister on the outer surface of a steam hose is a finding that should not be accepted as normal and passed over. Permeation, ply separation or other damage mechanisms are investigated. Piercing, pressing down or covering the blister is not a safe repair method.

Technical explanation

Surface blistering on its own does not indicate a definitive cause. Passage of the fluid into the layers, material incompatibility and the product's operating history are assessment topics. The condition of the reinforcement or internal damage may not be fully visible from the outside. Specific cover treatments designed by the manufacturer do not permit subsequent tampering with a damaged hose. Because of the risk in steam service, the finding must be handled according to the facility's safe removal-from-service and inspection procedure.

How is it assessed in practice?

After a safe shutdown has been established, record the size and location of the blister and when it was first seen. Include the hose identity and service conditions alongside the photo. For example, describe blistering that appears only after a certain temperature cycle together with the conditions of the event, not as a static image. If operations such as cleaning or cutting the damaged area could compromise the manufacturer's examination, obtain the relevant guidance first. A hypothetical cause and a test result should not be written in the same field.

Frequently asked questions

If the blister is small, can the hose be used a while longer?

A safe period of use cannot be given by looking at its size alone. The condition of the steam assembly must be assessed by an authorized procedure; this guide does not grant permission to continue.
