Short answer
Steam hose connections must be a system suitable for steam service and verified with the hose. A general hose clamp, a fitting of similar diameter or an assembly that looks sound is not sufficient. Assembly, inspection and any retightening requirements are determined by the manufacturer's instructions.
Technical explanation
In steam applications, high temperature, pressure and thermal cycling are important in assessing the hose-fitting joint. Connection standards such as EN 14423 address specific steam hose connections; this does not mean that random combinations of components are approved. Matching of the hose outside diameter, fitting geometry and clamping element is checked per product. The name of a connection standard does not replace a document showing that the parts used are actually within that scope.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Hose | Full series and size suitable for steam service. |
| Connection | Fitting, clamp/ferrule and mating end codes. |
| Assembly data | The manufacturer's preparation, attachment and inspection instructions. |
| Operational check | Safe shutdown, inspection and defined maintenance steps. |
How is it assessed in practice?
In the production file, keep the hose code, fitting and clamping element codes together. Tie the checks to be made during application to the authorized maintenance procedure; do not create a general torque or hot-line retightening recommendation. For example, when a series with a different outside diameter is used at the same nominal hose size, do not assume the existing clamp is suitable. If there is a finding of leakage or slippage in the connection area, investigate its cause instead of closing the matter with a 'tighten it a bit more' decision.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Can we say every heavy-duty clamp is suitable for steam hose?
No. The appearance or general strength name of the clamp is not sufficient. System data suitable for steam service with this hose and fitting is required.
