Short answer
A steam hose's resistance to an oily external environment is a property separate from its inner tube in contact with steam. The product's outer cover class and the scope of oil exposure must be checked. An oil-resistant cover does not mean the hose is suitable for oil transfer.
Technical explanation
Hose types for steam service and external environment requirements may be expressed with separate properties in the product standard or the manufacturer's definition. The inner and outer materials may not be the same. A product being designed for steam does not lead to the conclusion that it is also suitable for continuous external contact with fuel, solvent or cleaning agent. Findings such as swelling, softening or cracking of the cover require examination of the product and the exposure. External oil resistance should not be inferred from the product color.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Internal service | Steam type and pressure-temperature conditions. |
| External exposure | Full name of the oil, mode and duration of contact. |
| Cover evidence | The relevant product's statement of external oil/chemical resistance. |
| Inspection | Swelling, softening, cracking and exposure of the reinforcement. |
How is it assessed in practice?
On the field form, write 'steam' in the internal fluid section and the actual oil or cleaning product separately in the external exposure section. For example, if the hose lies in a machine's oil collection area, this is information different from a general ambient temperature note. Compare candidate products by their outer cover statement and the manufacturer's scope. Then also check the effects the couplings and seals see in the external environment. Do not close the assessment of the whole assembly with a single material abbreviation.

Frequently asked questions
Can an oil-resistant steam hose replace an oil hose?
These two uses are not the same. Outer cover resistance does not prove the inner tube's suitability for oil transfer; a change of service must be approved separately.
