Why an LPG hose is not a general fuel hose

Short answer

An LPG hose should not be treated as equivalent to a general fuel or oil hose. The product must be explicitly designed for the relevant phase of LPG, the operating condition and the mode of use. The suitability of the hose, connection, seal and assembly must be verified together.

Technical explanation

LPG service requires special product selection due to the flammable fluid and gas/liquid phase conditions. An elastomer appearing suitable in a general chemical resistance table does not approve a finished hose assembly for LPG transfer. Permeation, electrical requirements, connection safety and applicable regulations are addressed separately. A series a manufacturer has designated for LPG, or a usage restriction, cannot be extended to another product family. Unauthorized connections and uncontrolled test methods must not be used.

How is it assessed in practice?

In the request file, state the phase, temperature, pressure and the equipment being connected in addition to 'LPG'. Do not automatically approve a portable supply line and a tanker transfer assembly with the same template. Keep the conditions given to the manufacturer and the suitability response received in the same record. For example, if only a seal change was made, whether it meets the new fluid and phase condition must be reassessed. This content must not be used as an assembly or gas test instruction.

Frequently asked questions

Can a gasoline hose be used briefly for LPG?

Such temporary use cannot be recommended. There must be explicit suitability for the relevant LPG service; a claim of short duration does not make an unsuitable product safe.
