Reinforcement and outer cover in thermoplastic hoses

Short answer

In a thermoplastic hose, the reinforcement and the outer cover do not perform the same function. The reinforcement relates to pressure and mechanical loads; the cover manages contact with the external environment. A cover that looks thick or hard is not, on its own, an indicator of high pressure or long life.

Technical explanation

The overall behavior of a hose depends on the inner tube, reinforcement, cover and end assembly working together. Abrasion of the outer cover can expose the reinforcement; conversely, internal damage may be present while the visible cover is intact. Adding a protective sleeve is not an automatic improvement either: it can affect routing, heat build-up and inspectability. A manufacturer's claim regarding an abrasion or environmental test should be interpreted only within the stated model and test conditions.

How is it assessed in practice?

When comparing two alternative products, turn the phrase 'more durable' into measurable questions: Which test? Which sample? Which temperature? Which assembly? At a machine passage with continuous rubbing, first consider correcting the routing and support; simply switching to a thicker cover may leave the root cause in place. Add the end zones and hidden contact points, as well as the outer surface, to the inspection plan. Opening the cover to inspect the reinforcement is not done on a pressurized line in service.

Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.

Frequently asked questions

Can service life be estimated from the outer cover thickness?

It cannot be done reliably. Material, test conditions, motion, friction and maintenance must be evaluated together.
