Short answer
Slurry and dredging hose selection covers the properties of the solids in the liquid, density, flow rate, suction/discharge condition and mechanical movement together. The liquid being water alone does not show that a standard water hose is sufficient.
Technical explanation
In mixtures referred to as slurry, the solids content and particle properties are part of the flow and abrasion assessment. The vacuum requirement on the suction line is examined separately from the working pressure on the discharge line. In large-diameter and heavy hose assemblies, support, lifting and loads on the ends are also important. For moving or floating applications, the entire installation arrangement must be assessed. A life result obtained by the manufacturer with a specific material and arrangement is not applied directly to different site conditions.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Mixture | Type and proportion of solids, grain distribution and liquid chemistry. |
| Hydraulic condition | Flow rate, pressure/vacuum and temperature. |
| Mechanical arrangement | Support, lifting, movement and end loads. |
| Field monitoring | Location of wear, conditions and reason for replacement. |
How is it assessed in practice?
Add the liquid, solid material, approximate grain distribution and operational variations to the request. If flow rate information for sizing is not available, do not select the hose diameter from the pump motor power alone. For example, for a long assembly lifted from a single point in the middle due to its weight, the support plan should be reviewed separately. Linking wear records to the quantity of material conveyed and the service condition creates a more informative investigation file than comparing by calendar date alone.

Frequently asked questions
Does a larger diameter definitely solve wear?
Such a conclusion cannot be drawn on its own. The flow condition, particle behavior, routing and hose material are assessed together; an unmeasured decision to increase the diameter should not be made.
