Construction of corrugated metal hoses

Short answer

A corrugated metal hose is a type of hose that derives its flexibility from the corrugated structure of a metal tube wall. Fluid contact, pressure, temperature, motion and end fittings are evaluated together; the name stainless steel alone does not ensure suitability for every application.

Technical explanation

The corrugated body and the outer braid have different functions. The body forms the fluid boundary; a properly designed braid contributes to carrying the loads resulting from pressure. A hose sitting in a static connection and a hose subject to repeated motion are not the same selection condition. The motion type and minimum radius in the manufacturer's data must be taken into account; torsion must be prevented. ISO 10380 is the relevant product standard for metal hoses and assemblies, but the standard's name is not automatic approval for a specific fluid.

How is it assessed in practice?

Even for a connection between two fixed points, add installation misalignment and thermal movement to the drawing. A hose that looks short should not be a reason to force it into place. Tell the manufacturer the direction, amplitude and frequency of motion; do not send only the distance between the ends. Request the material certificate, welding records and assembly test as separate documents. Do not treat braid damage or permanent deformation observed in the field as merely a surface defect; ask for a competent inspection during a safe stoppage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a metal hose be installed twisted?

Twisting is not a suitable installation method. The end geometry and plane of motion must be arranged so that the hose works without being forced.
