Short answer
With water-based hydraulic fluids, hose selection cannot be made based only on the phrase 'hydraulic oil compatible'. The fluid class, actual composition, temperature and manufacturer approval are decisive. The same hose may have different limits for oil-based and water-based service conditions.
Technical explanation
The scope of ISO 1436 distinguishes between defined oil-based and water-based fluid classes; it also states that compatibility must be determined by the user and the manufacturer. This distinction shows that a statement of conformity to a standard does not cover all commercial hydraulic fluids. The additive package, mixing ratio and service condition matter. In addition to the hose inner tube, the seal, connection metal and cleaning agent are also within the scope of selection.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Fluid identity | Class, brand/product name and current technical document. |
| Mixture | Actual ratio in the field and permitted variation. |
| Conditions | Temperature, pressure and continuous/transient contact. |
| Compatibility | Comprehensive confirmation for hose, seal and connection material. |
How is it assessed in practice?
Attach the trade name of the fluid, its technical/safety document and the mixing ratio used to the quotation request. If the machine is to be switched to another fluid, do not automatically keep the old hose stock code. First open a compatibility record with the new fluid and ask the manufacturer for a response for a defined product code. For example, the phrase 'fire-resistant hydraulic fluid' alone is not enough to select the actual composition or the hose inner tube. In a conversion project, cleaning and residue of the previous fluid should also be included in the file.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
If its standard mentions water-based fluid, is that enough for every water-glycol mixture?
No. The relevant fluid class and the actual product conditions must be matched. The general scope of the standard does not replace manufacturer approval for a mixture whose name is unknown.
