Short answer
A hydraulic suction hose must be suitable for the vacuum that will occur at the operating temperature and for the flow conditions. Being a high-pressure hose is not sufficient for suction. Collapse resistance, inside diameter, length, bending and the passage cross-section of the connections are assessed together.
Technical explanation
On the suction side, the internal pressure being lower than the surroundings creates a load that compresses the hose from the outside. A positive pressure value does not express resistance to this load. For pump feed, narrow connections, routing and the operating conditions of the liquid matter in addition to the hose. The vacuum capacity must be valid for the stated temperature and size. On suction, air ingress and liquid leakage to the outside are not the same finding; the inspection should not be reduced to visible oil leaks only.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Vacuum condition | Referenced pressure, temperature and the product's permitted value. |
| Flow requirement | Pump feed, flow rate and the operating state of the fluid. |
| Passages | Narrowing in the hose, elbows and connections. |
| Observation | Kinking, cross-section narrowing and the condition in which the problem occurs. |
How is it assessed in practice?
Before replacing the hose for a suction problem, record the system diagram and symptoms: does the problem occur when cold, at high flow rate, or at a certain tank level? Inspect the hose for crushing or kinking during a safe shutdown. For example, instead of a long and narrow line, selecting a product with the same pressure rating and a thicker cover may not be a verified solution for the suction requirement. Assess the change together with the pump manufacturer's requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Does a suction hose with a wire helix never collapse?
No such guarantee can be inferred. The product has vacuum, temperature and bending limits. Base it on the service data of the relevant model rather than the presence of a helix.
