Short answer
Welding gas hoses are selected according to the gas to be conveyed and the equipment. Product suitability, connection and marking requirements are separate for oxygen, acetylene and other fuel gases. Color alone should not be used as evidence of gas type or international conformity.
Technical explanation
ISO 3821 covers rubber hoses used in gas welding, cutting and allied processes. A product referencing this scope does not mean it is the same for every gas and every usage arrangement. The gas identity, operating conditions and the equipment's connection requirements are verified. In oxygen service, cleanliness and material suitability are additionally important. The hose color must be read together with regional coding and the manufacturer's markings; color conventions from different applications should not be carried over to one another.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Gas identity | Full gas name and purpose of use. |
| Hose | Product code, marking and the scope of the relevant standard. |
| Connection | Ends suitable for the equipment and the manufacturer's assembly instructions. |
| Cleanliness/safety | Service-specific cleanliness and equipment protection requirements. |
How is it assessed in practice?
In the warehouse, create a separate product code and usage label for each gas type. Instead of just 'red hose', the purchasing line should state the gas name, size, standard scope and end connection. For example, when the equipment changes, the existing ends being physically connectable does not prove suitable gas service. Flashback and other equipment safety devices must be assessed through an authorized procedure separately from hose selection; this guide is not an installation instruction for them.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Are welding hoses of the same color interchangeable?
Color is not sufficient. Gas suitability, standard scope, operating condition and connection system must be matched.
