Selection questions for UHMWPE and XLPE inner tubes

Short answer

UHMWPE and XLPE are related to polyethylene but are different structural designations. UHMWPE refers to ultra-high molecular weight and XLPE to a cross-linked structure; no common pressure, temperature or chemical compatibility limit for all hoses can be derived from these names.

Technical explanation

In chemical hoses, the inner tube material is an important selection input; however, the reinforcement, outer cover and fittings are also evaluated. A chemical resistance chart must be read according to the material and its conditions. The fact that the inner surface resists certain chemicals does not mean that it is also suitable for cleaning steam or another temperature cycle. Product data for different structures within the polyethylene family should not be combined in a single row; the manufacturer's full series name and conditions of use must be retained.

How is it assessed in practice?

If the supplier's quotation says only 'PE' for the inner tube, clarify the actual material and series information. Communicate normal transfer and cleaning steps separately. In a comparison of two alternatives, show bend radius, vacuum, fittings and electrical requirements in addition to chemical compatibility. Do not fill in a temperature range that is not in the manufacturer's data table from general polymer knowledge. Have the behavior within a mixture of a substance that shows a positive result in the chart verified separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can UHMWPE and XLPE hoses be selected using the same data?

No. The actual product series and the manufacturer's conditions must be evaluated separately.
