Short answer
When selecting a brass fitting, not only machinability or price but also the alloy, fluid, temperature and the documentation requirements of the application are evaluated. The name 'brass' is not a blanket declaration of suitability for all chemical, gas or drinking water uses.
Technical explanation
Metal suitability is determined by the interaction with the fluid and the environment. The seal material is also checked separately. The fact that a product is used in a water line does not give automatic acceptance for a different water quality or for a drinking water application under different regulations. Contact with dissimilar metals and external humidity are inputs to the corrosion assessment. The pressure and temperature ratings of a brass fitting are taken from the manufacturer's actual product data; the rating of a steel part with the same geometry is not copied.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Alloy | Material designation of the actual product |
| Fluid | Chemical composition and temperature |
| Assembly | Seal and mating metal |
| Special use | Documentation requirement by country and product |
How to evaluate it in practice
On the supplier form, write the full name of the fluid together with the alloy or product material designation. For a drinking water request, state the country and application conditions and ask for product-specific documentation. The absence of past problems in a chemical line is not sufficient evidence for a new mixture. If dissimilar metals are present in the same connection, include this in the technical assessment. Do not identify the alloy or coating by color; rely on the product code and documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Can a brass fitting be used in all water applications?
No such general approval can be given. Water conditions, product data and applicable documentation requirements must be checked.
