Short answer
In a drinking water application, conformity is evaluated according to the target country, the product's components in contact with water and the scope of the relevant document. A food contact declaration or a color or odor test alone does not replace approval for drinking water use.
Technical explanation
The European Commission's drinking water framework addresses hygiene requirements for products and materials in contact with water as a separate topic. Acceptance routes and transitional arrangements may not be the same in different countries. Whether a document covers only the material composition, the finished product or specific sizes is important. This guide does not claim that any brand or certificate name is valid in all countries.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Country | Local acceptance route and current requirements |
| Contact | Water temperature and mode of use |
| Product | All components in contact with water |
| Document | Scope, product code and validity |
How to evaluate it in practice
Record the project country, water temperature, continuous or temporary use and cleaning conditions. In addition to the inner tube, list seals, connections and other materials in contact. Ask the supplier for a document with a clear scope and validity; carry out verification against the relevant official framework. Treat the hygiene plan for storage, transport and installation as a topic separate from, but complementary to, product conformity. For applications in Türkiye, the current local requirements must be checked separately. Do not conclude drinking water conformity unless the target country, product code, contact temperature and validity date match.

Before a scope decision is made
- Have the target country and the applicable drinking water acceptance/hygiene route been determined?
- Does the document cover all inner layer, seal, fitting and coating components in contact with water?
- In addition to the product family, do the full product code, size range and place of manufacture match?
- Do the water temperature, contact time, disinfectant and cleaning conditions agree with the document scope?
- Have the validity date, revision and transitional arrangements of the certificate/declaration been checked?
- Is a food contact or material declaration being mistakenly used in place of a drinking water product approval?
Frequently asked questions
Is a food hose always suitable for drinking water as well?
No. The specific requirements of the drinking water application and the product documentation must be verified separately.
