Defining skive and no-skive assembly

Short answer

Hose preparation can differ between skive and no-skive fitting systems. Which layer is prepared, where and to what extent is taken only from the manufacturer's instructions for the relevant hose-fitting system; there is no single method for all products.

Technical explanation

In some assembly systems, skiving can involve preparing the outer cover or, in special designs, a specific internal area. This does not mean that every hydraulic hose must be skived. Damage to the reinforcement can affect assembly integrity. In a system defined as no-skive, unnecessary skiving is not the correct method either. The hose, ferrule and fitting must have been verified together, and the preparation instruction must belong to the same combination.

How to evaluate it in practice

On the work order, show the instruction number next to the 'skive: yes/no' information; do not estimate dimensions from the guide text. Link the tooling and preparation check to the manufacturer's method. Visibly mark component changes to prevent the operator from carrying an old assembly habit over to a new product. If there is preparation damage or uncertainty, do not accept the assembly. The final inspection must cover, in addition to the crimp diameter, whether the hose preparation was done correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does skiving provide a stronger connection?

This cannot be said in general. Integrity comes from correct assembly of the relevant system; additional skiving without instructions can cause damage.
