Short answer
In spiral wire hydraulic hoses, the reinforcement is formed with a wire arrangement different from braiding. This construction is seen in product families used in heavy hydraulic applications. For selection, the pressure, impulse, temperature and assembly requirements of the relevant model should be read before the number of wire layers.
Technical explanation
ISO 3862 is one of the product standards covering spiral wire reinforced hydraulic hose types. Spiral construction and wire braid are not the same reinforcement geometry. Nevertheless, an unconditional comparison such as 'spiral is more durable in every case' does not form a correct selection approach. There may be differences in diameter, flexibility, installation and connection system. In particular, the assembly system used for spiral series cannot be derived from the ferrule or crimp data used for a braided hose.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Reinforcement type | Spiral wire; a classification separate from braided construction. |
| Load cycle | Peak pressures and the repetitive load conditions of the application. |
| Geometry | Bending, outside diameter, weight and placement of connections. |
| Assembly | Series-specific fitting, ferrule, preparation and crimp information. |
How is it assessed in practice?
When assessing candidate hoses on a heavy construction machine, define the load cycle and pressure fluctuation. Then check whether the large connections, together with the hose body, fit into the assembly space. As an example, even if two products meet the required pressure, the selection is not considered complete if one contacts other equipment during movement. In the production file, keep the full series, size, end combination and verification source together. Do not carry over a braided hose's assembly data without the fitting, ferrule and crimp instructions for the spiral hose.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Does bending a spiral hose to a tighter radius invalidate the pressure rating?
The pressure value on the label cannot be relied on for use outside the product's installation limits. Proper installation conditions are part of performance; the pressure value does not compensate for a geometry error.
