Selecting fitting material and plating

Short answer

The material and plating of a fitting should not be selected on the basis of appearance or color. Fluid contact, the external environment, temperature, galvanic interaction and the manufacturer's mechanical limits are evaluated together; the name stainless or the name of a plating does not on its own ensure suitability.

Technical explanation

Corrosion behavior is the interaction between a material and its environment. Stainless steel can also suffer localized corrosion under certain conditions; with plated carbon steel, the condition of the plating matters. Using different metals together is evaluated separately according to the environmental conditions. A change of material does not guarantee that the same geometry will retain the same pressure rating or assembly torque. The manufacturer's actual product material and the relevant performance data govern.

How is it assessed in practice?

For an open site on the seashore, write the internal fluid and the external salty humidity as separate exposures. Instead of 'stainless fitting', specify the required material grade and the document scope. Do not convert hour figures from a plating test into a guarantee of field life; the test conditions are different. If there is corrosion on an existing fitting, also investigate fluid leakage, cleaning chemicals and contact between dissimilar metals. In the purchasing comparison, make document and maintenance requirements visible, not just the unit price.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stainless fitting remain corrosion-free in every environment?

No. The material grade and environmental conditions must be evaluated together; the name stainless does not mean unlimited resistance.
