Short answer
How a hose or hose assembly is to be evaluated under the PED is determined by the role of the product, the design conditions and the scope of the relevant regulation. Statements such as ‘it operates under pressure’ or ‘it has a CE-marked part’ are not sufficient on their own for classification.

Technical explanation
The European Commission's PED page explains Directive 2014/68/EU in terms of the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of stationary pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. However, there are exclusions and classification details. The role of the hose as a single product, a piping component or part of a larger assembly must be examined by an expert; this guide does not assign a category or module.

How to evaluate it in practice
For the assessment, prepare the product drawing, fluid, PS/TS design information, size and intended use. State where the product will be placed on the market. Distinguish whether the pressure value is an operating value or a design limit. Have the required conformity route determined by a competent expert; if the legislation requires it, verify the role of the notified body. Explicitly question to what extent component documents cover the final assembly. For markets outside the EU, local regulations are addressed separately.

Before a scope decision is made
- Is the role of the hose or assembly as a single product, a piping component or part of a larger assembly defined?
- Have the maximum allowable pressure, temperature, fluid and volume/DN data been verified?
- Have the PED scope, exclusions and other regulations been reviewed against the current official text/guidance?
- Have the classification and conformity assessment module been determined by an authorized expert?
- Has the conformity responsibility for the component document been separated from that for the finished assembly?
- Have the exact product, revision and scope of the CE marking or manufacturer's declaration been recorded?

Frequently asked questions
Is a CE marking automatically applied to every pressurized hose?
No. A marking decision must not be made before the scope and conformity obligations have been determined.
