Short answer
A material certificate provides information on the material properties of a part; on its own, it does not show the pressure, sealing or cyclic performance of the completed hose assembly. Material correctness and assembly correctness are separate but related areas of inspection.
Technical explanation
Inspection documents under EN 10204 and hydrostatic test methods address different subjects. The fact that a fitting is made of the specified stainless steel does not eliminate the risk of a wrong thread, a faulty weld or improper assembly. Similarly, missing material traceability for an assembly that has passed testing is a separate problem. The question each piece of evidence answers must be clearly bounded.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Material | Evidence relating to grade and batch |
| Production | Machining and assembly records of the part |
| Performance | Test results of the specific assembly |
| Link | Traceability from document to physical product |
How to evaluate it in practice
In the production file, link the material document to the relevant part or batch and the test result to the physical assembly. Match the heat/batch numbers in the documents with the production records. Submit a material grade change to revision assessment even if the appearance is the same. In the summary presented to the customer, use the statements ‘material document available’ and ‘assembly tested’ separately. Do not close out an incomplete check on the strength of another document's existence. Do not close out both material traceability and finished assembly performance with a single document unless each has been verified separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 316 material certificate ensure suitability for every chemical?
No. The chemical, temperature, concentration, surface conditions and context of use must be evaluated separately.
