Short answer
NPT and NPTF are not the same thing. NPT is evaluated within the scope of the general-purpose pipe thread standard, and NPTF within the scope of the Dryseal design. Similar size and taper do not prove that the connections have the same tolerances and sealing behavior.
Technical explanation
ASME B1.20.1 covers NPT and related general-purpose pipe threads. ASME B1.20.3 describes the sealing design of Dryseal threads, which also controls crest and root contact. The name Dryseal does not mean that a lubricant or suitable sealant is prohibited in all applications; the manufacturer's instructions and fluid compatibility govern. The fact that an NPTF part physically mates with an NPT part does not mean that it forms an approved assembly.
Topic-specific checkpoints
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| NPT | ASME B1.20.1 general-purpose pipe thread |
| NPTF | ASME B1.20.3 Dryseal design |
| Identification | Standard, size, gender and product record |
| Assembly | Correct mating and manufacturer method |
How is it assessed in practice?
If the marking on the old part cannot be read, do not decide on NPTF using a thread gauge alone; ask for a product code, drawing or an appropriate inspection method. Add the thread standard and the male/female gender of the connection to the order. Do not use sealant as a means of compensating for a mismatch. Overtightening or the use of damaged threads must not be accepted during assembly. When exact tolerances or gauge acceptance values are needed, the licensed standard and the manufacturer's quality instructions must be used; this guide does not replace them.
Original editorial recommendation; not a clause of a standard.
Frequently asked questions
Is sealant never applied to an NPTF connection under any circumstances?
Such an absolute rule is not correct. The instructions of the manufacturer concerned and the compatibility of the material used with the fluid must govern.
